Sales Styles Series – Interview with Thrift & Tell

By: Ashley Randall

We had the opportunity to chat with the queen of second hand retail –Thrift & Tell. If you haven’t heard of Thrift & Tell, stop what you are doing (now go check out her page). Well now you can appreciate her amazing Instagram flow and aesthetic. Thrift & Tell similar to our other sale fashionistas, scours online for the best deals (honestly we love to see it). Here is the twist – Thrift & Tell specializes in second hand retail. She has many guides for grabbing designer consignment as well tips for selling merchandise on your own. While Thrift & Tell has been a bargain hunter since birth (sale shoppers are born – not made) and she just woke up one morning with the name (the rest is history). Not only does Thrift & Tell share her amazing finds with all of us, she also loves interviewing and writing for her blog The Tell. She said the best place to shop online to get the best deals is the Real Real, if you are open to consignment. While she prefers to hunt for merchandise at the Gap, Old Navy and good old Nordstrom Rack in person, but she finds that Neiman Marcus and Saks offer better deals online. While she does not have the opportunity to stop by sample sales in NYC, she does score some awesome stuff online! While if you were to spot here on any ordinary day, she would most likely be wearing a blouse, scarf, skinny jeans and Chanel ballet flats

What is your favorite part about the sale community?

Good Discounts at the Monse Sample Sale

By: Riva Neumann

The Monse Sample Sale was the place to be for some nice discounts! Though by the time the sale opened to the public there wasn’t much left, what was there was still worthwhile to shop. There were a lot of showstopping pieces starting at around $200, and some more ready-to-wear pieces starting at $50. While there was a lot of really good pieces available, there was a lot of damaged pieces as well. The good news is that the damaged pieces were significantly less so it was worthwhile to buy and have fixed.

The shoes were definitely something to get at this sale. Shoes ranged from $50-$150 and pretty much all were in good condition. They had flats, heels and boots as well as $10 slides.

Overall, I gave this sale an 8.5/10. I would highly recommend this sale if you are familiar with the brand, but even if you aren’t, this was a great sale that should not be missed!

Solid and Striped Sample Sale has Solid Prices

By: Riva Neumann

The Solid and Striped Sample Sale is a great place to get some bathing suits as summer winds down, especially for Labor Day weekend! They have a variety of different styles available in all different sizes. They mostly have super cute one pieces for $60 and a decent amount of 2 pieces for $30 each. They also have bags available as well, small for $30, large for $40.

The sale has more of a variety of one piece bathing suits in many more styles than the two piece ones. There were racks of one pieces in all shapes, sizes and colors while there were mostly a lot of very few styles available for two piece ones. There weren’t a lot of racks at this sale in general but for the most part you can definitely find something you like!

Overall, I gave this sale a 7.5/10, Happy shopping!

Amazing Prices at the Jonathan Simkhai Sample Sale

Jonathan simkhai sample sale 2019

Eclipse came from LA once again to host the Jonathan Simkhai sample sale in NY. We were delighted to check it out during the last few moments of set up. The Jonathan Simkhai sample sale had the most gorgeous dresses and jackets for really reasonable prices. $185 for a blazer? Now that’s a good deal!

Cocktail dresses were $195 and gowns were priced as marked. Don’t worry, they were also highly discounted. There were also some ready-to-wear items, including tops for $85 and skirts for $80. They had a lot of pants for $95 and a nice selection of activewear as well.

There were a few racks of one-of-a-kind pieces: specific gowns and some dresses. Overall, nice selection of each style in multiple sizes! I gave this sale an 8.5/10, this is a great sale to go to and would highly recommend!

The NYFW Sample Sale for Those Who Love the Hunt

NYFW sample sale

An international magazine hosted a sample sale to get rid of all of the items they bought for photo shoots. Once I spoke with the super sweet staff member, I understood what was flying. That background explained why there were so many random one-of-a-kind pieces at this sale. I spotted 2 Zimmerman dresses for $199 each, a Club Monaco sale for $30, a Sonia Rykiel top for $20.

There were Zara and H&M items for $5-$10, and fashion earrings for $15-$50. There was even a pair of Erdem, Delce & Gabbana sunglasses for $150 each. Was the clothing worn? Not exactly 2nd hand, but yes, it was worn to shoots. For someone who wants fresh out of the bag items, this was not the right sale.

For someone who enjoys the hunt, and sorting through 20 items to find the perfect deal, this deal was thrilling. It’s over now, but next time the sale is announced – I’m in.

Opening Ceremony Sample Sale – Good Pricing but Mostly Stuff from OC Brand

opening ceremony sample sale 2019opening ceremony sample sale

Opening ceremony sample sale Is taking place In Williamsburg in Brooklyn. It  opens to the public tomorrow, on Friday the 23rd of August & we were thrilled to check it out during the preview day today. The sample sale took place in a large garage. The merchandise was all over the place: boxes of accessories as you enter from coat check, racks of clothing throughout and piled box of shoes. the men’s clothing was on one side of the room & the women’s on the other.

We spotted some Staud handbags priced as low as $60. Unfortunately, most of the items at the sale were of the Opening Ceremony brand and not from other designer brands. Let’s face it, the discounted designers is the highlight of the OC sample sale, so we weren’t thrilled about this development.

All in all, shoes were the best part of this sale. Sneakers were no more than $40, Vans were as low as $15! The only issue with the shoes was there was an abundance of styles, however no abundance of sizes. The discounts ranged anywhere from 70 to 80% off on some super-cool funky merch.

Hot tip: check out this sale on Sunday, because in past years, OC almost always would take an extra 50% off everything on the last day! Let’s pray that history repeats itself this time.

The Gant Sample Sale is Classic 260 – BAD

By: Jacqueline Munro

The Gant sample sale is currently going on at 260’s main location, which is quite a drag. I’m sick of dealing with the consistently rude staff and outrgeous prices. Despite the decent merchandise, the discounts sucked. I do not recommend going to this sale unless you’re in dire need of some Gant (which I doubt you are).

At this sale there are a lot more options for men than women. For men there is a huge offering of suits, outerwear, shirts, pants, and shoes. For women there are a some stylish blazers, a few pairs of funky pants, a couple of pairs of trendy shorts, and a minimal amount of shoes. There were some unisex accessories including sunglasses and scarves, but nothing that blew me away. The most shocking thing I saw at the sale was a Harry’s shave kit.

Overall I rated this sale a 5/10. While the selection of clothing that they had was alright, I cannot stress how lousy the prices were. I mean t-shirts were $30… Not today Satan!!!!

The Pricing at the Roberto Cavalli Sample Sale is Amazing

By: Jacqueline Munro

The Roberto Cavalli sample sale is being hosted by the third party retailer Luxe Market in SoHo this week. If you haven’t gone yet, you’re missing out. Almost everything at the sale is 90% off, but the selection is somewhat limited, so you better get over there ASAP!

At this sample sale they have gowns, short dresses, embellished jeans, leather vests and jackets, and beautiful tops. Most of the pieces are classic Cavalli. Funky patterns, bright colors, and unique designs. Although the selection is small each item comes in various sizes and they will be restocking daily. The showroom is very well organized and the staff members are dedicated to making your shopping experience superb. Overall I rated this sale an 8.5/10. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed with Luxe Market.

DL1961 Sample Sale is the Place for Sustainable Jeans With These Discounts

By: Riva Neumann

The DL1961 Sample Sale has it all- in terms on jeans that is. They had so many styles available in all sizes all for $60 a pair, and the best part is that the more you buy, the more you save! It is $60 for 1 pair, $50 for 2 and $40 for 3! I was able to get a pair of shorts, a pair of jeans and a denim skirt all for $120, which is much less than the price of a single pair retail. They had a full table of jeans as well as boxes marked by size. There was also a table in front for kids jeans as well. They had a small section for men, but it was great they had some available.

The fitting room was a small, communal space that was sectioned off but that is pretty typical for sample sales, I was just happy that there was a place to try them on!  They also had some ready to wear as well, but definitely come for the denim.

I gave this sale a 9/10, go check it out if you are in need of a new pair (or just want one honestly, the discounts are too good to pass up)

The First PatBO Sample Sale in NYC

patbo sample sale 2019

Patbo is hosting the first ever sample sale in NYC. The Brazilian-founded brand has been blowing up recently with a ton of influencers flaunting the bold prints and tropical bathing suits all over the most glorious vacation spots in the world. Needless to say, we were delighted to get a sneak peak to the first sample sale of its kind.

The sample sale was set up in the showroom. Racks were organized by color: all greens on one rack, pinks on another, golds on a third. Prices for clothes range between $120 and $350 and are 40%-50% off retail. The evening gowns are on three racks in the front of the room and range from $250 to $600 gowns. Given that these dresses retail for $3,000+ the discount reaches 90% off easy.

Fun fact, bathing suits on hangers are $100, and there are bins with bathing suits ranging from $35 to $70. There are also a few bins of shoes (sizes 8,9 and 10) for $25 a pair.

Taking everything into account, the sale was a success. The staff was extremely sweet, place was clean and organized. Price drops could have been a bit deeper, but we won’t complain. Not about this one.
