Minor Excitement for Minor History

By: Eve Orbach

Minor History is currently hosting a sample sale that offers discounts of up to 75% on their leather products. The brand’s focus is on creating more environmentally friendly leather products. All of their products are tanned without harmful, toxic dyes and all their leather comes from animals that were already being used in the food industry. Any brand that is doing their part to help the environment gets extra approval from me. Go Minor History! Even though the intentions behind this brand are in the right place, this sale is pretty disappointing.

Most items are priced at around $20–$50. The style of the merchandise is basic, for lack of a better word. They were mostly solid colors and the designs weren’t all too exciting. (And by that I am just trying to avoid calling a boring spade a boring spade)

The space was large and well organized. Items are separated neatly by item, type, and price. There are many styles and lots of stock to choose from.

The best deals of the sale are keychains for $2, luggage tags for $5, and large clutches and bucket bags for $20.

Loyal readers, save yourself some time and skip this one. Lame options + not so great prices= a 4/10

(Michelle) Waugh, Don’t Go

By: Eve Orbach

This Michelle Waugh sale has discounts of up to 70% off on outerwear. Featured are trench coats, blazers, puffers, cashmere coats, shearling, and more. The same exact discounts are currently being offered on their website, so if you’re thinking of purchasing something save yourself the trip (and instead just order from your couch in your sweatpants).

Most of the coats are either around or well above $600. The styles of the coats range – they have both detailed patterns and your basic solid. There are lighter for spring and fall and heavier ones for the winter. They have a nice selection of styles.

The space was pretty small, so small that it consisted of maybe 4 racks if we’re being generous. Also, the size of the sale totally contributed to the awkwardness I felt when taking pictures of everything while being so closely watched. Oops! The staff was helpful and friendly.

I give this sale a
3/10. Even though the merchandise was very cute I thought the prices were unjustified. The fact that there wasn’t that much stock also contributes to this not so great score. Hopefully they’ll be better luck next time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Korres: Great Prices and Products!

By: Eve Orbach

At this Korres sale skincare products, limited-edition sets, makeup, body butters, and more can be found at discounts of up to 70%. Korres is a Greek company founded by an actual pharmacist (they’re not messing around, people), and their focus is on using natural ingredients. I’ve been using the same three face products since I was in middle school, but you can tell that Korres is legit because they carry their products at Sephora.

The products are arranged on tables and separated by prices ranging from $5—$20. I was impressed by the discounts. The products all smell like heaven and the packaging is adorable. I couldn’t test the products myself, but by seeing thousands of good reviews online I was more than reassured.

The space is modest but there is still tons of merchandise. The staff is sweet and knowledgeable about the company and its products.

Card payments only. Government identification is necessary for signing in in the lobby.

This sale is a 6/10. If you’re in the market for budget-friendly skin products ranging from brow gel to perfume, you should give this one a shot.

Mediocre Margaux

By: Eve Orbach

The Margaux sample sale features handmade women’s flats, loafers, and heels at discounts of over 50%. The Margaux brand emphasizes comfort and style. While I am definitely all for a brand that’s focus is making comfy shoes, some of the shoes look like something my grandma would buy. However, if you are willing to sift through the hundreds of shoe boxes to find some cute options then all power to you, my dear friend.

Most of the shoes stay within the $75–$100 range. Some of the shoes sold are marked as lightly worn and were sold at a higher discount of $45.

The shoes’ quality is excellent. The leather in the shoes is super soft and I was impressed with the stitching and lining. I’ve been to some sales where the merchandise was literally falling apart; so good job Margaux for delivering on your promise of high-quality. The style of the shoes are pretty basic and could go with almost any outfit.

The space was organized by shoe size. There is tons of sizes (33–45) and even more pairs of shoes. The staff was helpful and friendly.

I give this sale a 4/10. There were lots of nice options to choose from, but the discounts weren’t all that great.

Clever Alice Sample Sale – Perfect for Cute and Affordable Items

By Ahuva Levy

Calling all classy ladies … this one is for you. The Clever Alice sale was surprisingly pleasant. Although the store looked about shady on the outside, the inside was a different story. There were good vibes, good music sweet staff and darn good prices.

I scored dresses sold at Revolve, Anthropologie and other places for $39. There was a lot of variety in styles and sizes – you could really find something for everyone. I would say the sale is definitely worth a trip. Especially since it is conveniently located not too far from penn station.

A definite stop on your next trip to the city! Happy shopping.

Benjamin Taylor: chaotic, but successful!

By: Gabriella Rose

Set up: The set up of the Benjamin Taylor sample sale is defined as “eh.” There were coats, dresses, shirts, and pants all scattered around the room- which made it rather unorganized and hard to shop in. Besides for the chaos, the sale had a few $5, $10, and $20 racks in the front, and the rest of the merchandise was then placed throughout. The staff was also very sweet and helpful.

Merchandise/pricing: None of the merchandise was marked and there were no signs throughout the room; people had to ask what the prices were for each item. Most of the items had amazing prices- Juicy Couture coats were each $50. There was a lot in stock, and everything had multiple color options as well. There were tons of fancy gowns all over the walls, that would be great for events. I saw lots of coats of all different lengths as well.

Rate: 8/10, Great prices, sweet staff, worth it if you need a gown for an event or a new winter coat.

REMARKABLE deals at Ramy Brook and J Slides

By: Gabriella Rose

Set up: The Ramy Brook and J Slides sample sale was a huge hit. In the front of the space, the sale had two racks filled with Snowman New York coats. Throughout the rest of the store, there were other brands such as Generation Love, Ramy Brook, and more. There were a few bag accessories (both fancy and casual) placed behind the counter, and there was also a fairly large shoe selection as well. This sale was exceptionally organized, and had a ton of inventory.

Merchandise/ pricing: The pricing of the sale was as follows: Snowman NY ranged from $160-$330, Ramy Brook $50-150, and Generation Love $20-$60. By the looks of it, there was a lot of merchandise in stock. I noticed an exceptional amount of jackets, from all different brands. There were cute hot pink, black, gray, faux leather, and other jackets and puffers. Snowman NY had a bunch of cute red and black vests also. Also, Generation Love had a bunch of great black, gray, pink, and white sweaters that were only $35 each. This sale was really great.

Rate: 9/10 Great prices, gorgeous stuff, and a great time

Dennis Basso-so Deals

This Dennis Basso sale features women’s winter wear at marked down prices. Discounts vary item by item. There are furs, evening gowns, dresses, scarves, hats, and more.

Let me start off by saying that the merchandise is beyond amazing. The furs are so stunning and came in a wide variety of colors and styles. The gowns are luxe and equally gorgeous. The sizes of the gowns ranged from sizes 0–14! This sale was definitely a hard one to review because while I was there, it took every ounce of willpower I have to not to take everything home.

Furs and evening gowns are usually investment pieces, so high prices are to be expected. However, there are DEFINITELY better deals to be found.

The space is huge and well organized, so shout out to Soiffer Haskin for such consistent performances. Besides having to give proof of ID at the entrance (extreme, much?) this sale was a breeze. The staff was sweet and helpful. Clothing is separated by item type and size.

If you’re a big fan of the brand and willing to splurge, this might be the sale for you. All sales are final. I give this sale a 3/10 because I was disappointed by the high high prices.

Barely Impressive Billy Reid

This Billy Reid sample sale features lots of men’s clothing including button down shirts, pants, jackets, ties, and more. There is also a small women’s section that has dresses, skirts, and tops. Most of the items are along the $60–$100 price range. There’s lots of under $100 deals, but at a sample sale paying $79 for a sweatshirt or $99 for a skirt is not gonna happen (unless the designer is more high-end).

Men— if you’re in the market for new clothes for the workplace, it’s probably worth it to check this one out eventually. Wait until the last day for markdowns to get the best bang for your buck.

The best deals include ties for $29 and knits for $39.

All items are neatly hung on hangers and separated by item type and size. The staff was too busy hanging out with each other to be helpful. (Sorry not sorry)

There is a buy more, save more deal with some of the pieces. 4 woven shirts cost $225 and purchases of $600+ get you 20% off.

I give this sale a 3/10 for unimpressive prices. The merchandise was solid but it didn’t really blow me away. There are a LOT of items at this one, so maybe try your luck to find a diamond in the rough.
