A.V. Max is the Place for All Your Jewelry Needs

By: Riva Neumann

The A.V. Max Sample Sale was honestly one of my favorite sample sale experiences. The staff were so nice and helpful and they offered mimosas and water while I shopped! The pieces ranged from $5- $25 and they offered a free cuff with every purchase. Rings and earrings were all $5 and buy 4 get 1 free. Everything was very organized by piece and collections and everything was labeled so finding the prices was very easy to do.

I bought the most adorable anchor earrings and also got a really pretty rose gold colored cuff as well. I would highly recommend this sale to anyone looking for gifts or just a little treat for themselves. The prices are too good to pass up! I also loved the monogram necklaces and zodiac necklaces that were only $10 (80% off retail!). They also had some beautiful statement necklaces that were only $15 and some really dainty, delicate necklaces for $10.

Overall, I gave this sale an 8/10! Go check it out, you won’t regret it!

Zadig & Voltaire Sample Sale – Expensive but Worth it

By: Riva Neumann

The Zadig & Voltaire Sample Sale was definitely an expensive sample sale. The discounts weren’t as great as some would want but it was pretty decent discounts. The pieces were really nice and there was a lot available for men and women and one rack of children’s clothes. The staff was also super helpful in identifying the different prices for the cashmere sweaters since they were all in the same rack which was annoying to go through but the staff was really nice about helping to figure out prices.

The accessories and shoes were my personal favorites! The bags were super cute and nothing was more than $200! The shoes were also so great; sneakers were $90, boots $175 and sandals and other shoes were only $100! Their leather selection was also pretty good and there was a lot available for $250 The sale was also not as crowded and there was no line to get in.

Overall, I gave this sale a 7.5/10, check it out if you are dying to get some Zadig & Voltaire pieces for a discount!

Paul Smith Sample Sale- the Place for Men’s Sports Jackets and not much else

By: Riva Neumann

The Paul Smith Sample Sale  had more men’s sportscoats  and suit jackets than I have ever seen in my life. Racks and racks of sportscoats, suit jackets and casual jackets lined all of the walls of the showroom. They also had a nice selection of men’s trousers, shoes and accessories, all at a pretty discounted rate. While the menswear was abundant, the womenswear available was pitiful. One small racks of haphazardly thrown womenswear doesn’t exactly qualify for advertising womenswear. There were a few jackets and some knitwear but overall, not worth it for the womenswear.

The women’s shoes, however, had a really good selection of sneakers, dress shoes and flats ranging from $70-$125. The shoes would be worth the time to head on over to this sale for us ladies!! The kids’ clothing rack was also pretty sparse and had very few pieces ranging in price from $15-$60.

Overall, I gave this sale a 6.5/10. The sale was pretty crowded when I went and the lack of womenswear very much influenced this score.

Going, Going, Gone: Inside the Lord & Taylor Closing Sale

Going, Going, Gone: Inside the Lord & Taylor Closing Sale

By: Cristina Martin

Lord & Taylor opened it’s New York flagship doors back in 1914 making it the oldest department store,  established in 1826. Lord & Taylor officially closes it’s doors to its 5th Avenue mansion January 2019. Goodbye to over 100 years of memories of mothers, daughters, and friends shopping at the iconic store. This news came to us shortly before Henri Bendel told us they would be closing their doors after 123 years at the upper 5th Avenue location. Why? Well, it’s no secret that retail is in some serious trouble. The internet and sites like Amazon have been threatening retail and brick and mortar businesses for years now.

Lord & Taylor was a huge part of my childhood. When my mother finished work, we would browse the floors looking for makeup, outfits for special events and every day, and accessories. I’ll never forget walking into the bright lights on the cosmetics floor captivated by the perfume smells and the glamour. As a kid, there were only a few pieces of clothing that weren’t from Lord & Taylor. Also, it wasn’t Christmas until we passed by the Lord & Taylor windows.

When I was a New York City college student, I entered Lord & Taylor for the first time unaccompanied by my mom. We switched when I started college; she left the city to pursue a new job in New Jersey. All of the sudden Lord & Taylor wasn’t so glamorous anymore. I noticed the retail chain begin it’s descended from high-fashion. Today the store is on it’s way to being extinct and the Christmas windows are black.

It was only right to return one more time together to pay our respects and score some good deals. This past weekend was my first time walking in the store after quite some time. Cosmetics are just as I remember, but after a closer look, I was horrified. As you ride up the escalator, the sales floor is a mess. There is clothing shoved everywhere with no rhyme or reason. Brands or sizes aren’t together. Shoppers are scouring racks just to find something. Almost every floor is like this. It can take you a good day or two to go through everything. Most of the clothing was 40% off with an extra 20% off. Some higher-end brands that were left were 30% off instead of 40%. Some brands pulled their merchandise from the department store. NARS, Coach, and Ted Baker are few big names that chose not to restock the troubled retailer.

How does this sale compare to sample sales? Well, it’s hard to make a fair comparison since many sample sales are only a few days, lower overhead costs, lower inventory. This sale has enough merchandise to fill a department store and significantly higher overhead costs. The short answer some items on sale are better than sample sales, but some items are still overpriced compared to sample sales. For example, J Brand and Halston Heritage just had sample sales these past weeks. Prices at the respective sales were really good for sample sale standards. However, at Lord & Taylor, I scored a pair of J Brand jeans for $14, and my mom picked up a Halston shirt for $16. You can’t beat that! When I walked over to the evening dresses, I found Marchesa Notte for $900. At their last sample sale, they were going for $300.

If you have the head and the time to sit there and go through the seven floors that make up that iconic flagship, or you’re like me and want to pay your last respects, it is 100% worth the trip. You can go home with some really lovely pieces. If you’re a seasoned sample sale shopper, while you browse think to yourself, “Can I get this cheaper at a sample sale?” Happy Shopping!

Fashion Lauren Checchi Maison De Papillon Review Sample Sale Sample Sale Review ShopDrop Uncategorized

Two for One: Inside the Masion De Papillon and Lauren Checchi Sample Sales

By: Cristina Martin

Two sample sales in one space! The Masion De Papillon sample sale kindly shared their space and included the Lauren Checchi sample sale.

The Masion De Papillon sample sale featured their clothing collection along with handbags form Khirma New York. Khrima New York had their new and classic collection on display. You can shop totes, handbags, and evening bags from Khirma New York. Her bags were made from fabulous materials, but still pretty pricey. The discount was large, one bag went from $1,090 to $400, but for a sample sale that’s not a huge name is still expensive. The same bag was offered in white for $150 because it was scuffed. Masion De Papillon featured 100% silk shirts, cashmere pieces, and leather pants. Everything was beautiful and very soft! Silk shirts were $25 – $50 and cashmere and leather ranged from $100 – $300. Still very expensive for a sample sale.

Lauren Checchi’s strengths lie in color! All her bags come in exquisite colors, inside and out. Some of her bags will have will have one color outside and a complementary color inside. Lauren Checchi had purses in all sizes. She even had a super chic laptop bag with smaller pockets inside. If you’re looking to accessorize, you can also pick up card holders and key chains. (Even the puff key chains!) Lauren Checchi used a price list instead of individually pricing items. That’s always a great help!

We rated both sales a 6 out of 10. The merchendise was really great – beautiful and high quality, but they lost points on pricing. We understand the markdown is high, but most sample sale shoppers won’t pay those prices for a non-high ticket item. The designers for each respective brand were present at the sale. This was such a nice touch considering they gave shoppers personal attention, and they have the most knowledge on the brand. They were also all super sweet! Happy shopping!

Wanna Know a Secrete about the Boll and Branch Sample Sale?

Boll and Branch Sample Sale

By: Cristina Martin

Who knew a linen company can be so interesting? Well before you head out to the Boll and Branch sample sale, let us tell you a thing or two.

Boll and Branch is a luxury linen company founded by a couple in New Jersey. (Yes, cool things can happen in New Jersey too.) They pride themselves in using sustainable materials, and were the first in the industry to be certified by the Fair Trade Organization. This husband and wife then opened their first and only brick and mortar location in Short Hills, NJ. This isn’t the highlight of their careers. It has been reported that three U.S. presidents, both Bushes and Clinton, have slept on Boll and Brand sheets! Are you ready for the secret? Rumor has it that two former presidents slept on these sheets with their mistresses. Well, I think we can almost positively ID one. *cough* Clinton *cough*

That’s enough story time for now. Let’s chat about the Boll and Branch sample sale. The sale featured a bunch of their bedding, bath towels, robes, and even pj’s. The brand retails between $200 – $500, so markdowns were pretty good. However, we do recommend you wait for further markdowns to try to score the best deal. Boll and Branch offer super plush and comfy sheets. If you’re looking to decorate you bed for your next Netflix binge (or next affair, hey we don’t judge) we’ll see you there. Happy shopping!

Battle of the Best Denim – The Frame Sample Sale

By: Ashley Randall

Today we had the opportunity to check out the Frame Sample Sale at 260 Fifth Avenue. Kinda of ironic that 260 is hosting yet another jean company, last week was J Brand so let’s see how this one compares.

The Frame Sample Sale had a shocking selection of sample pieces which were all 50 dollars. The was a lot of variety in both men’s and women’s denim.  While the price was higher for jeans, starting at 75 dollars, compared to J Brand which began at 70 dollars. The jean shorts were 50 dollars which is a steal compared to the retail price.

Overall, we rated the Frame Sample Sale a 6.5 out of 10. The sample pieces were great but the pricing on all the other merchandise was way to high. If a male friend, relative or significant other needs a pair of denim, I’d check it out!  In the battle for the best denim, who do you think should win?
