Calling oneself a true fashionista means more than knowing that mules are newly in style and funky, thin framed sunglasses are sticking around for the rest of summer 2017. The majority of fashion lovers in NYC who call themselves “experts,” don’t really know where these iconic designers are even from. In my opinion, a real fashion buff knows the history of fashion, including the origin of designers and the roots where their looks stem from. Read on to learn more about fashion icon, Schiaparelli.

She married a con-man in France, worked as a nanny in England, and was featured in Vogue in 1927 for one of her first designs. Her contributions to the fashion world are still prevalent today, yet, not many people know outside of the industry know of Elsa Schiaparelli.

Schiaparelli was a single mother of a sick child, bankrupt, and destitute when she moved from New York City to Paris, France in 1922. She befriended many prominent artists in Paris, quickly surrounding herself with giants of the art world like Salvador Dali and Paul Poiret.

Schiarpelli sample sales nycSchiarpelli sample sales nycDue to the economic strains left by second world war, the House of Schiaparelli closed its doors, along with other big fashions – her rival, Chanel, was among them. However, Schiaparelli was one of the only major fashion houses to achieve a revival. Her influence is still felt in the industry today, with many designers and artists are still inspired by Schiaparelli’s reality-warping designs. Elsa Schiaparelli deserves more than the occasional nod from the industry; while others were sewing and sketching, Schiaparelli was defying fashion with an artistic ingenuity that was never before seen by the fashion world.
