To Wear White or To Not Wear White, That’s the Question

By: Cristina Martin

Your entire life you hear you mom say either, “It’s Memorial Day. We can now wear white pants,” or “It’s Labor Day. Gotta put the white pants away.” Well this weekend we face the latter. Many blogs and magazines promote white pants or boots as a favorite during the winter months. So who do we listen to? Mom or the fashion gurus? Let’s investigate a bit further.

After the Civil War there was a rise in nouveau riche. Those who belonged to old money wanted to be differentiated from the nouveau riche since they were considered low class. Old money women set fashion rules within their circle. This way those who didn’t follow were easily identifiable as nouveau riche. Wearing white only during summer months was one of the many rules put in place. In 1894, Labor Day was officially incorporated as a holiday, and society adopted it as the unofficial end of summer.

Naturally, there were society women who told the rule-making society women where they can put their rules. Surprisingly, Coco Chanel was a fashion rebel and wore white all year around. However, by the 1950’s every women’s magazine that mattered scholded women on the fact that white was worn between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Period.

So it’s 2018, what do we do now? Well, if ask my mother, the answer is a very strict ‘no.’ And how dare you for asking. On the other hand, many women’s (and men’s) publications are telling us to break free from those musty, old rules, and embrace white 365 days a year. I guess you need to decide how traditional you are. If you embrace tradition, then hang up the white pants after this weekend. If you are a fashion rebel, we’ll be eying your Instagram to see just how you pull it off. Hey, if Coco Chanel wore white all year around. That’s all I’m saying.

Happy Labor Day weekend!

Convertible and Reversible fun at the Karolina Zmarlak

Karolina Zmarlak sample sale

By Melanie Capruso

We stopped by the Karolina Mzarlak studio today to check out Karolina Zmarlak, Khirma New York, and Meredith Marks sample sale. With the three brands present, there was plenty of inventory to choose from. From apparel to handbags to furs. The handbags were beautiful ranging from large leather purses to Swarovski crystal encrusted clutches. The ready-to-wear was equally stunning with plenty of pieces for every palette. What particularly stuck out to me was the convertible and reversible items. Many of the clothing options were able to be worn both inside-out and backwards. There were also pieces were the longer sleeve could be fastened into a bow on the back or draped over the shoulder. The clothes could be transformed to satisfy even the wildest imagination.

We rated the sale a 6 out of 10 because of the inventive pieces and the steep prices. While it was reported that the pieces were 75% off, they were still too high for this shopper. But if the prices are no deterrent, make sure to RSVP by emailing, rsvp@karolinazmarlak.com, before stopping by!

Wanna Know a Secrete about the Boll and Branch Sample Sale?

Boll and Branch Sample Sale

By: Cristina Martin

Who knew a linen company can be so interesting? Well before you head out to the Boll and Branch sample sale, let us tell you a thing or two.

Boll and Branch is a luxury linen company founded by a couple in New Jersey. (Yes, cool things can happen in New Jersey too.) They pride themselves in using sustainable materials, and were the first in the industry to be certified by the Fair Trade Organization. This husband and wife then opened their first and only brick and mortar location in Short Hills, NJ. This isn’t the highlight of their careers. It has been reported that three U.S. presidents, both Bushes and Clinton, have slept on Boll and Brand sheets! Are you ready for the secret? Rumor has it that two former presidents slept on these sheets with their mistresses. Well, I think we can almost positively ID one. *cough* Clinton *cough*

That’s enough story time for now. Let’s chat about the Boll and Branch sample sale. The sale featured a bunch of their bedding, bath towels, robes, and even pj’s. The brand retails between $200 – $500, so markdowns were pretty good. However, we do recommend you wait for further markdowns to try to score the best deal. Boll and Branch offer super plush and comfy sheets. If you’re looking to decorate you bed for your next Netflix binge (or next affair, hey we don’t judge) we’ll see you there. Happy shopping!

Cravin’ Some Carven Sample Sale

Carven Sample Sale

By: Cristina Martin

Labor Day Sale Early Access! Receive 30-75% off sitewide with code TAKE30 at LastCall.com. Offer Valid 8/28.

Carven is a brand we all love, so when the Carven sample sale showed up on our feed, we jumped! We had to travel all the way to the west side, beyond the subway, for this one. So, the stakes were high! The room was fairly small but jammed packed with clothing, shoes, and accessories. The Carven sample sale featured both men’s and women’s clothing, however there was no formal changing room. Everything was strikingly beautiful. From coats to dresses, we were impressed. You can shop very simple, elegant pieces to embellished and funky accent pieces. You can definitely shop for any occasion at the Carven sample sale.

We rated the Carven sample sale a 7 out of 10. Carven lost points at pricing. Yes, all the pieces were stunning, but the prices were still just so high. It was a also very confusing. Women’s items were as marked. Items that had prices written on the tag were considered samples. Apparently, these are already marked down $70. Items with the the price written on a colored round sticker are regular stock items. Everything was mixed together, so you didn’t know what you were getting yourself into. Men’s items were pretty confusing as well. They had a price list, but that didn’t match what was on the tags. Word of advice, ask a sales associate for accurate pricing.

If you’re down to splurge, the Carven sample sale is worth the visit. Happy shopping!

Winter is Coming at the Michelle Waugh Sample Sale

Michelle Waugh sample sale

By Melanie Capruso

Even though it is currently over 85º in New York City, fall and winter are just around the corner. To help us all prepare, we stopped by the Michelle Waugh sample sale. The sale was held at their NYC showroom and featured a rack of discounted coats and blazers. Their pieces are all 100% cashmere and would be perfect for when the temperature finally drops. The staff was extremely helpful and discussed some of the pieces and explained their features.

We rated this sale a 5 out of 10 because while the selection of coats and outerwear was beautiful, there was something to be desired price wise. The least expensive piece that I could find was a $330 coat, which is a steep price for a cashmere coat that can’t be worn in sleet or snow.

Let us know if you’ll be stopping by the Michelle Waugh sample sale in the comments below!

Summer Forever at the Solid & Striped Sample Sale

Solid & Striped sample sale

By Melanie Capruso

The quantity and variety of styles at the Solid and Striped sample sale made us wish summer would never end. Held in the NYC HQ on 20th between 10th and 11th (it was a trek), the sale featured both men’s and women’s apparel and swimwear. Compared to their usual selling price, the merchandise at the sample sale was a bargain! A one-piece that was selling for $158 online was $48 at the sale. The swimwear was all very current and would be perfect for that labor day trip to the Hamptons. From bright neons and girly gingham to more muted navies, the bathing suit styles could match any palette.

The one drawback was the sizing. While the sample sale did have sizes from XS-L, even the most generous large was teeny. For those who aren’t a size 0 (myself included), it may be difficult to find the best fitting styles at the sale. Due to the beautiful and stylish pieces and their prices, we rated the Solid and Striped sample sale a 6 out of 10. If you’re still feeling summer and are planning on attending this sale, make sure to RSVP by emailing rsvp@solidandstriped.com

Backpack Bonanza at the Herschel sample sale

Herschel brand sample sale

By Melanie Capruso

As a loyal fan of the Herschel brand, I was over the moon ecstatic to be able to cover the Herschel sample sale 2018! The sample sale was run by 260 sample sales in Soho. After watching the 260 Instagram story, I was expecting the line to be around the block and would take almost an hour to get in. Thankfully that wasn’t the case and I only needed to wait around 5 minutes. The Herschel sale had raincoats, fleeces, luggage, wallets, hats, fanny packs, Ipad cases, and of course, their signature backpacks. As someone who has had the same Herschel backpack for the past 6 years without any signs of wear or tear, I was excited to see the options. There were about five different styles for the larger size backpacks, with an emphasis on darker colors. The sale had many different sizes of backpacks, but they were all grouped together and it was hard to differentiate between sizes. What was surprising was the pricing of the backpacks. The larger backpacks cost the same as the mini-backpacks, which made the mini bags not worth the $34.99.

We rated the Herschel sample sale a 7 out of 10 because of the well-stocked inventory. Let us know what you thought about the sale in the comments below!

One of a Kind Pieces at the JSong Vintage Archive sale

JSong Vintage Archive sale

By Melanie Capruso

The JSong Vintage Archive sample sale featured a mixture of ready-to-wear and one-of-a-kind pieces. The sample sale was housed in their NYC HQ in the middle of the garment district. The inventory was arranged on racks by price, which made it easy shop. The detailing on the clothes were spectacular and not like anything else I’ve seen sold in other stores. The pieces were made with a fabulous attention to detail! As the majority of the pieces were samples, the sizes were smaller and there were only one or two pieces by style. What really made the JSong Vintage Archive sale stand out was the attentive staff. From the minute I walked in they were ready to help me with anything I needed!

We gave the JSong Vintage Archive sale a 6 out of 10 due to beautiful inventory and the incredible staff. Make sure to check out this sale before it ends!

Why is This Random Brand So Expensive: The Tucker Sample Sale

Tucker Sample Sale

By: Cristina Martin

We traveled off the beat and path to 11th Avenue to check out the Tucker sample sale. The sale was held in a less vibrant, Chelsea Market look-a-like venue. The space was small, but there were quite a few racks and tables filled with men’s and women’s clothing. The advertisements read that the sale was 90% off. Prices started at $45 and went up to $80. That’s pretty pricey for a brand that we’ve never heard of. On the bright, side the stuff was cure!

We rated the Tucker sample sale a 6.5 out of 10. Their strength lied in variety. Almost every pattern can be found in dress, shirt, and skirt form. They had a few boxes with really pretty $20 shirts. (We even snagged one!) Most of the sizing was small or xsmall, but there were a few large items as well. For men, the Tucker sample sale had colorful button downs and flannels. If you are in the area, check out the sale. Hey, you may be willing to break out your passport, travel to 11th avenue, and pay a million dollars for nameless clothing. By all means, happy shopping

Back to School Fashions with Petit Bateau

Petit Bateau sample sale

By Melanie Capruso

The Petit Bateau sample sale is coming at the perfect time to stop the end-of-summer blues, and get us excited for fall! Petit Bateau is a high quality French clothing brand for children. They’re known for their colorful and cozy clothing that both parents and kids adore. Their sale features both late summer and fall pieces for children from infants to 12 years old. The selection is incredible with everything from lightweights tees to chunky knits.

The only disappointment was the price. Petit Bateau is an expensive brand retailing for $70-$150, which is a steep price for clothes children will out grow. The Petit Bateau sample sale offers around 50%-60% off per item. BUT, we were told the prices will drop and the sale will b extended into next week.
