We All Need Clean Awesome Boots: Modern Vice Sample Sale

modern vice sample sale review shopdrop

After the major snow storms, all of my boots were covered with white and grey stains from the chemicals all over NYC streets. As soon as I saw the Modern Vice sample sale, I headed down there for a new pair of knee-high boots ($498 at retail, $75 at the sale). I’ve been wearing them ever since. The sale is in the Modern Vice HQ, where you could see the production process in the back room. There is a wide selection of shoes and boots in all sizes. Cowboy red & silver boots, snakeskin boots, and fancy stiletto boots from the Archive private collection. This is one we definitely recommend.

Jocelyn Fur Sample Sale Opens To The Public Today

Jocelyn Fur sample sale review shopdrop app

Jocelyn Fur has the coolest fur jackets in the world. Aside from the regular regal fur coats and jackets that you see in the movies featuring royalty from the Upper East Side, the brand carries a number of modern contemporary parkas, with colored fur lining the inside of denim jackets or rain coats. Prices at retail easily reach into the thousands. Yesterday, I headed over to check out the merchandise. It was great to see Deb from JenX – who gave us the warmest welcome and explained that all items are up to 60% off. We found coats for as low as $300. As a perk, there were shrugs and fur jackets from Oscar de la Renta at the sale as well. If you have a few minutes during lunch today, definitely sneak over to the sale – it was opened to the public today – no reservation required. As always, photos and prices below. Enjoy!

Make a Statement with Finds from the Fivestory Sample Sale

Fivestory Sample Sale

By Christina Martin I Photo Credit: Racked

If you are looking for your next statement piece to stand out at a wedding or gala, head down to the Fivestory sample sale. Fivestory, an Upper East Side boutique with a reputation for carrying funky pieces did not disappoint! The Fivestory sample sale had a variety of tops, bottoms, dresses, shoes, hats, jewelry, and even home décor. Some well-known brands include Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein, Nicholas Kirkwood and a large selection of Carolina Herrera. The prices were insane! All apparel are sold at an incredible 80% off, and shoes were at 75% off. However, there is a caveat. Usually, set prices are listed according to item, but the Fivestory sample sale lists the percentage discounts instead. So, make sure your phone calculator is handy to find out how much each item costs. This sale is pricier than most other 260 sample sales with the average price per item closer to $200 than to $100. As always, you can find the deets and pictures below. Enjoy!

The Difference Between Thrifting & Sample Sale Shopping

Lindsey Castin was a Thrift Shopper before discovering sample sales

By Lindsey Castin, ShopDrop Intern

Growing up in NYC the fashion possibilities were endless but, it wasn’t until I was in high school that I started to go thrift shopping. My mom lives by the rule to never throw things away because they will always come back into style. This holds true with the choker, bomber jackets, scrunchies etc… the list can go on forever and ever. I found myself (and my friends) thrifting because what was currently in style was what was in style in the 80s/90s. A lot of items from that time period would end up in thrift stores because people who lived through that era donate their old clothing to the store. Like most trends, the big name brand stores don’t pick up on them until much later after they are started by the younger generation and thrift stores offer a affordable, unique, and fun fashion option to people who love clothes and following the latest trends (or setting them!) but are also on a budget. I’m also attracted to the idea of thrifting because of its impact on up-cycling (reusing old items for a new purpose) and being a place where people with low incomes can shop and still find nice things. Supporting your local thrift shop helps families in need get the clothing that is a necessity while offering an abundance of choices.

“I think the difference between the two is that sample sales are of higher quality but thrift stores are definitely cheaper.”

Before working as an intern for ShopDrop I had never been to a sample sale. When I first learned what they were I pictured a really intimidating store with extremely nice items that I would not be able to afford even with the added discount. Although this is true for a select number of sales the majority of them are just as hectic as thrift stores and filled with normal people. Sample sales are a bit different because you choose to go to one based solely on the brand, which is helpful if you are looking for something specific and is not as overwhelming as having a million options. As I get older and can afford to buy  clothing items that are better quality. I have found myself obsessed with every sample sale I go to and always finding something that I will wear forever at a fair price.

I think the difference between the two is that sample sales are of higher quality but thrift stores are definitely cheaper. If you can afford to spend a bit of extra money I would recommend sample sales. Lots of the time when I thrift I buy a lot of things (because I don’t really have to choose since it’s all usually $1 per item) and then I never end up wearing half of it. Opposed to sample sales where I spend around $50-$200 on an item and it will become a wardrobe staple. Not to say you cannot find name brand things at a thrift stores, it’s just harder, but when you do that is always a great find and will be cheaper than a sample sale but you really have to dig!—my biggest thrifting accomplishment was when me and my friend found matching Kate Spade bags for $10! Thrifting will always be my first affordable fashion love but, sample sales now have a new found place in my heart.

You risk not having a large selection to choose from but if you’re not looking for anything in particular, I would suggest going then. You will definitely make out big!

Altuzarra Sample Sale Insights By Bespoke Bargains

Altuzarra sample sale

The bi-annual Altuzzara sample sale has earned its place among my favorite sales due to its gorgeous pieces and generous discounts. The sale usually takes place in July and December, and I’d been scouring my inbox the past couple of weeks waiting for news on this months dates!

The sale opened today at 8:30 am and I arrived within the first hour. The sale space wasn’t crowded, but there is limited real estate at the coat check, and I waited about 15 minutes before heading in. The sale usually offers a mix of shoes, bags, current season RTW, and past season pieces. Before I get into some of the specific pieces/collections that were available, let me update you on pricing. Shoes top out at $500 for current season lace-up OTK faux pearl boots (retail $2,195!) Regular boots are $300 and heels/pumps are $250.

There are lots of bags and they are priced as follows. Exotics (only available in smaller sizes) and large bags are $400, medium sized bags are $300, and mini bags/clutches are $200. Bags received a significant price drop from the last sale! In July, large bags were $550 and small bags were $350. Today I spotted lots of Ghianda leather knot hobos for $400 (retail $2,295), Ghianda saddle bags for $300 (retail $2,195) and a handful of Ghianda mini saddle bags in python for $400 (retail $2,395.) I didn’t see any clutches, but there were a few mini saddle bags in Suede for $200. I’ve heard from people that visited the sale later this afternoon that those may have all sold out. FYI, handbags are mostly available in neutral colors like brown, black, and red.

Current collection has flat pricing by category. That’s a departure from previous sales where pieces were a straight 75% off retail. I very much prefer the current model. Coats are $500, dresses are $300 (I saw a few that retail for $2,995, like the Filippa dress!) and knits/tops are $150. Towards the back of the sale space, you’ll find past season pieces. Some are true samples, but many are production pieces that are brand new with tags. The most abundant size is 36. Tops/skirts/pants/knits are all just $50! Dresses are $125, blazers are $150 and outerwear—I didn’t see any—is $200. There is also a small selection of past season shoes for $50! The only exceptions to this
categorical pricing are a smattering of heavily embellished and /or beaded pieces that are price as marked.

There is a generously sized fitting room and lots of mirrors. Staff is incredibly friendly, helpful and, perhaps most importantly, super knowledgeable about the pieces. I will say that I didn’t think the selection of RTW was as strong today as it was in July, though the prices were phenomenal. Overall the sale is not quite as well stocked and there are fewer pieces to go around. I’d definitely still recommend a visit, particularly if you’ve had your eye on a handbag.
