Sample Sale Review: Marc Jacobs

We just returned from the Marc Jacobs sample sale with bags full of goodies. If you have a few moments to get to the sample sale, we definitely recommend you check it out. Sadly, no pictures were allowed in the building, so we included some look alike images below and lots and lots of descriptions.

So, on the top floor, there are racks and racks of clothes. Most of the racks are for women, but there are three racks for men as well. Everything on this floor is 90% off so for tops a $800 top is selling for $80 and a $2,200 skirt is selling for $220. There are lots of party dresses, cocktail outwear, everyday tops, skirts, fancy pants (we mean that literally). There is a nice selection of sizes – from small to large, and the merchandise is beautiful. I picked up one silver dress with black tulle and love it.

Sample Sale Review: Multi-Designer at Katya Dobryakova

Katya Dobryakova at the Multi-Designer Sample Sale in NY

Descending to the basement of the Katya Dobryakova store on Broome street, we were greeted by a large room, which held the multi-designer sample sale. One thing united all the stands: each one had one-of-a-kind merchandise.

ARIANA BOUSSARD-REIFEL

We first chatted with Ariana Boussard-Reifel, who designed the bangles Beyonce wore to the Grammys. Aside from being extremely friendly, her jewelry is stunning! She sells bangles, earrings and rings all made out of metal. Each item is raw and sharp in its design. I couldn’t help myself and bought a pair of gorgeous silver earrings: long oval hoops that instantly made me feel extremely dressed up. All of her items were sold at a steep 80% discount! Yes, that means that items which typically sell for $500 were now selling for $125.

KATYA DOBRYAKOVA

After that we headed to the podium at the back of the showroom, where we discovered the most stunning collection of designer sweatshirts. We had the opportunity to chat with the founder and designer, Katya Dobryakova, about her brand. Unlike most designers, Katya didn’t start her career in  fashion, rather, she started in graphic design. Her dream was to transplant the detail of graphics into clothing. And her brand is exactly that. This year’s collection is themed around the circus and her sweatshirts have the most exquisite circus-themed designs. They are all machine-washable, easy to take care of and create a gorgeous effortless look. At the sample sale, they were sold at an 80% discount. So at $100, they were a steal. If you have the time to get to Broome street, do it. You will have no regrets.

MARTEAU

For the vintage lovers out there, Marteau was selling some awesome pieces from the 40s in America, Ethiopia and the Middle East. From beads to pearls to knits, there are items for every taste and every budget. There are awesome finds for $25 dollars each! In addition to those designers, there were other items from Alyssa Less, KZ_K, Meredith Marks, Les Savage, Raul Penaranda.

Friday Repost: The Psychology behind Sample Sales

Sample Sale Mentality

Racked published an awesome article explaining why sample sales are so very addictive. So here below we will break down the article into three simple points so that if you are extremely busy like the rest of us, you can down the whole article in under one minute. Ironically, the article mentions all the psychological factors but doesn’t mention the bottom line, which is that sample sales offer luxury merchandise at mass-sale prices.

First: Limited Availability Settings

The setting of limited time and availability has this awesome effect on the body. The setting releases dopamine, the same ones that get released when working out, having sex or eating chocolate. No wonder, sample sale shopping could be so much fun!

Second: It’s A Sport

Shopping sample sales effectively and finding that perfect merchandise is a sport. And therefore, those who are good at it, love it. They love it and keep on doing it. They scout out the best sales, stand in line at dawn, and dash for the gold once the doors open.

Third: Offline Engagement

In a world where online purchasing is at higher rates that it ever has before, people crave unique experience that will offer them in-person interactions. One of the few shopping events that allows for such an experience without being replicated online is the sample sale. And so, the hunt for the bargain continues.

NY Sample Sale Review: J Mendel

J Mendel Sample Sale NY Jen X

By Dynasty George, independent designer & fellow

My first time using the ShopDrop app, I wanted to find a Sample sale that was exclusive and elite, one I could only have access to via the app. So, I decided to check out the J Mendel Sample Sale! You had to register beforehand the day and time you wanted to come, which I loved because sample sales can be very hectic so having an organized system really impressed me.

I loved how much information that app gave me about how to register, the season they were selling, and the discount amount! It made it easier for me to shop and plan beforehand.
Sample Sale NYC J Mendel White Gown
When I arrived, I first checked in, they had people in the front making sure everyone was registered. I registered myself and a plus one, which was great because who likes shopping alone? They then had a friendly coat check person who took my coat & bag but let me keep my camera. The next thing I saw were racks full of faux fur shawls, racks full of immaculate dresses, and a corner full of pristine shoes with a sign overhead that read “All $100.”  I felt like I walked into my dream walk in closet, one owned by a Kardashian. All the racks were organized by size, making shopping easier. I had to go up a dress size from my usual size, so I would recommend the same for anyone buying designer dresses. I immediately fell in love with every dress I tried on, feeling nothing less than a princess. The showroom provided people to help us like an actual retail store, which was very helpful. They set a spot in the fitting room for me, zipped me in all the dresses, gave me practical advice and assisted me towards other dresses I might have overlooked. The staff there was amazing and extremely helpful. Since there was a registration beforehand, the atmosphere wasn’t at all chaotic. It was very laid back and sophisticated. I felt I like I was in the actual retail store, as I saw stylist work privately with clients and other associates assisting others with purchases, I felt totally comfortably and at ease shopping!
at the J Mendel Sample Sale in NY
Overall, I had an amazing experience at the J Mendel Sample Sale. If you have an event coming up and you need to buy an extravagant dress, defiantly check out a sample sale first! The design and quality of the clothing was incredible compared to the price it was reduced to. I would even recommend getting your wedding dress at a sample sale if you’re on a budget! I tried on a beautiful couture wedding gown that was 60% off the original price!!! I definitely will be using the ShopDrop app for all my future shopping endeavors!

Sample Sale Review: Lionette Jewelry NY

New York Sample Sale Jewelry

By Liza Sakhaie, ShopDrop Fellow

After following the Israeli jewelry line since their start eight years ago, I finally got the chance to purchase some of their statement pieces at their showroom sample sale this week! When I walked in, I was struck by a wall with tons of unique Lionette pieces, all 40% off their original prices.

Their infamous chunky necklaces, typically around 700 dollars, were marked down to almost $400.

The colorful, bold earrings add the perfect touch to an all white or all black outfit (originally $150-$250). And lucky enough for me, there were over 30 pairs to choose from!

My favorite of the selection was the buckets of jewelry to the side of the main wall, with pieces marked down to under $100 dollars. In their I found a number of “hand bracelets” that I had seen on bloggers such as Lainy Hedaya, otherwise known as Haute In Habit.

This signature Lionette piece, originally $700, was now just $100!

Since all of Lionette’s jewelry is handmade and they work out of their showroom, I was even able to put in a request to recreate a sold out choker in my favorite colors (in the works now– to be posted on our Instagram soon)!

Spyder Sample Sale Review: 3 Reasons Why Now is the Best Time for Ski-Gear Shopping

Most of us can’t wait to shed the coats, scarves and layers to don chic sandals and tiny tops. By the time the last storm comes around, and city dwellers are forced to bundle up and stay home, thoughts of sunshine, flowers and little dresses fill our minds. However, the smartest among us will cease the moment to stock up on quality fashion merchandise for next season at a ridiculous discount. So here  are three reasons as to why this is the best time to shop for ski clothes along with our review of the Spyder active sample sale in NYC.

Sample Sale Blog Review Spyder Active
Sample Sale Review: Spyder Active

Season is over and so everything is on sale.

Precisely because everyone is focusing on the little flowery dresses, stores like Bogner and Spyder Active are putting their luxury items on massive sales. Bogner held a sample sale earlier this month. Spyder Active is holding its sample sale for another week at 260 5th avenue. Jackets and snow pants, which typically cost over $1,000 are offered at a whooping 60% discount.

Ski coats of high quality can be worn for years.

If you are one of those awesome fashionistas who doesn’t like to buy items at the end of a season for fear that they will be out of style next year, skiers and snowboarders have nothing to worry about. Fashion trends in the snow sports world are the slowest to change. What has been cool and hip in 2010 is still perfectly hip today, if preserved in good condition, which brings me to the last point.

Fashion turnover is one of the slowest in the skiing industry.

Invest in high quality snowgear. It pays off. Jackets and snowpants from high quality companies will remain in great condition for a number of years. So rather than wait till next year when you want to go skiing when you will have to buy junk or pay full price for a warm pair of snowsuits, go to a sample sale, get a great deal – and then welcome the summer with the rest of us.

We Dressed it up at the Derek Lam Sample Sale

By: Liza Sakhaie

Naturally, we don’t all have time to go to every sample sale in the game, forcing us to prioritize our favorites. As a business student, I sometimes find myself weighing the pros and cons of each sale. But considering the fact that on average, Derek Lam’s pieces cost $1000, the choice was simple. I knew I had to seize the opportunity to get my hands on the American designer’s sensible and detailed collection.

When I walked into Clothing Line, the sample sale host, I realized that my experience might be a little thrifty—I was definitely going to have to hunt to find the best items, especially since I only managed to make it there on the final day. After tossing aside some super baggy sweaters (originally $1400!!) and making it past the more matronly pieces of the collection, I came across this gem— (Score!!)

Derek Lam Sample Sale

Lam upgraded the classic statement white blazer with a splatter paint detailing, making it easy to pair with both white and black trousers. I quickly found a pair of wide leg black suit pants to match, creating the perfect outfit to stand out at work or any event. The total cost of the outfit originally came out to almost $3,000 ($2000 for the jacket alone) but I got it for almost 70% off! Thank goodness for ShopDrop for always being there for me when I need to find a good sample sample.

If you’re looking for a timeless yet modern additions to your closet, definitely add Derek Lam to your list of Sample Sales to check out next season. You’ll be sure to find the right combination of classy yet unconventional pieces!

Stay tuned,

Liza

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Eileen Fisher

Sample Sales, Sample Sale, Sample Sale NY, NYC,

Meet Eileen Fisher; designer extraordinaire and creator of her own eponymous clothing line. Her comfy high-end line features everything from pajamas to business casual clothing. Her unique flare manifests itself in each of her pieces, which are designed to be comfortable, yet fashionable. Eileen’s line was premised on simplicity. She was irked by the fact that men have such an easy time getting dressed in the morning, while women’s clothing is forever getting more complicated. She doesn’t believe in runways or huge in-your-face events, she believes that clothing is made for real life.

Despite Eileen’s rise to fame in the fashion world, she didn’t follow the most traditional path to the designer life. Check out these 5 things you didn’t know about Eileen Fisher:

1Fisher’s Lack of Fashion Background

That’s right folks, this savvy designer who makes clothes for everyday use is not a graduate of FIT or LIM. Rather, she attended University of Illinois, starting out as a math major, before switching to interior design.

2. The Inspiration for Fisher’s First Piece Was Derived From the Japanese Kimono.

Those who have been exposed to the Eileen Fisher line are quite aware that none of her pieces look anything like the traditional kimono. Rather than the actual garb itself, Fisher was astonished by how this traditional article of clothing has withstood the test of time, and is still incredibly relevant. “I was intrigued that the kimono was the only shape in Japan that they used for years, how can you make a design to last that long? A design that belongs to a moment, but also, transcends a moment.” (Ellen Fisher quoted in an article in Fashionista.) This inspired the quality of simplicity in her line.

Sample sales, NYC Sample Sales, NYC, NYC Shopping, Designer Clothing

3. She is an Entrepreneur as well as Designer

As mentioned previously, unlike most famous designers with renowned brand name lines, Fisher had no formal education in neither fashion nor business. The first piece of clothing she made was done in her home, using a sewing machine and a pair of scissors. “If I had some technical training, maybe I might have gotten the idea off the ground earlier,” said Fisher.” On the other hand, because I didn’t know what I was supposed to do or how I should do it, I just did it differently in my own way.” (http://fashionista.com/2016/04/eileen-fisher-fashionista-meetup)

4. She’s an Activist

Not only is Eileen an established designer, she also plays a large role in assisting women and girls by activating their leadership potential. The “Activating Leadership Grant” funds programs that help women and girls activate their natural leadership qualities. Each year of the grant has its own unique theme. Non-profit organizations that fit the category apply, and are awarded on a relevance and need basis. 2016, the 7th year of the grant accepted organizations that follow the theme of applying leadership attributes.

5. There’s a Sample Sale coming up!

Want to see what all the hype is about? Come check out the Eileen Fisher sample sale at the boutique’s 9th street location. The sample sale will feature a peek at the spring line for up to 50% off in select sizes. Winter line in various sizes for 40% off. Keep in mind this sample sale is only two days long so save the date! March 11th and 12th
