All things random at the MoMa Design Sale

By: Gabriella Rose

Set up: The Moma sample sale had tables in the middle of the room, filled with tons of items. While the room was spacious and organized, this sale was slightly wack. All of the merchandise was so random: from pads of paper to dishes to watches, this sale was very interesting. There were staff members behind each of the tables, and they explained what everything was. All of the items were neatly laid out and displayed, and it was quite easy to find what you are looking for.

Merchandise/ pricing: Most of the merchandise was 60% off, besides for jewelry and watches; Jewelry and watches were 50% off. There were tons in stock of everything, from plates to casual bags. The prices in this sale were great, but retail prices were also not so high. This sale is not worth the trip, unless you need a new clock or notebook. Most of the items were not considered “cute-” the plates were bright red with weird apples on them.

Rate: 4.5/10 Eh merchandise, low prices (but retail prices are not too high either), sweet staff, not worthwhile to attend.

Dennis Basso-so Deals

This Dennis Basso sale features women’s winter wear at marked down prices. Discounts vary item by item. There are furs, evening gowns, dresses, scarves, hats, and more.

Let me start off by saying that the merchandise is beyond amazing. The furs are so stunning and came in a wide variety of colors and styles. The gowns are luxe and equally gorgeous. The sizes of the gowns ranged from sizes 0–14! This sale was definitely a hard one to review because while I was there, it took every ounce of willpower I have to not to take everything home.

Furs and evening gowns are usually investment pieces, so high prices are to be expected. However, there are DEFINITELY better deals to be found.

The space is huge and well organized, so shout out to Soiffer Haskin for such consistent performances. Besides having to give proof of ID at the entrance (extreme, much?) this sale was a breeze. The staff was sweet and helpful. Clothing is separated by item type and size.

If you’re a big fan of the brand and willing to splurge, this might be the sale for you. All sales are final. I give this sale a 3/10 because I was disappointed by the high high prices.

YAY For YIGAL AZROUEL

By: Eve Orbach

According to Wikipedia (yes folks— we are THAT studious) “The Yigal Azrouel woman is effortlessly cool and confident…Yigal prides himself in the craftsmanship; he finely sources original fabrics, furs, and embellishments from all over the world to create the finest products for his customers.” At discounts of up to 90% off on gorgeous pieces! (including ones from the runway!) this sale is not one to miss. There are stunning feminine dresses, edgy leather jackets, and everything in between. Also included is a strong accessories section featuring many styles of belts, shoes, scarves, and bags.

The gowns are definitely the highlight of the sale; the patterns and designs are so intricate. Other highlights are their beautifully made winter coats and stylish heels.

There is a great range of sizes in all categories so extra points for that! Most sample sales are very lacking in this category, so hats off to the good people at Yigal Azrouel.

All items are hung up neatly on hangers and divided by attire and item type (standard, leather, runway, etc.) The staff was very helpful and helped some of my fellow shoppers find some real hidden gems.

Cash and credit card accepted. All sales are final.

The (Not So) Clever Alice Sale

By: Eve Orbach

When one of the first things you hear upon entering a sale is “the golden rule is to NOT trust the sizing”, you know you’re not off to a great start. The Clever Alice pop up features multiple brands such as Stellah, PORTO, Vivienne Hu, Inizio, Raw Earth Wild Sky, and more at discounts of up to 80%. Featured items include sweaters, skirts, tops, dresses, jackets, and bags. The prices really varied by item and brand, but as a whole I would say the deals were simply 😐.

The sale is organized by brand and clothing item. Every piece is hung up neatly on hangers. The staff is super helpful to the point where I literally didn’t have to carry any item for more than .2 seconds, when it would then kindly be whisked away to the fitting room. The fitting room does not have a mirror inside, so every time I tried something on I had to go out and do a little fashion show in front of every person in the store. (There were definitely a few not too approving looks given to me by some of the other customers, lol. To each their own, guys!)

There honestly is nothing too notable about this one. If you’re in the area it may be worth popping by because they have some good pieces. Overall though the issues with the sizing were pretty frustrating and the deals were by and large underwhelming. Hopefully once the sample sale season kicks back up again there will be bigger and better ones to come!

Come on Eileen… to the Eileen Fisher Sale!!!

By: Eve Orbach

The Eileen Fisher sale at 260 Wooster has crazy markdowns, lots of stock, and great pieces. Most items fall in the $20-$40 range. Jackets are the highest priced item and are just $70! Also available are women’s tops, sweaters, cardigans, pants, skirts, accessories, and more.

Attached below is the complete price list. My favorite steals are the sweaters for $40 (compared to the usual $200/$300+on the Eileen Fisher website) and the pants for $30 (versus the typical $200+ ones also being sold on the company’s website).

Everything is hung up neatly on hangers and organized by item. The sale is spacious and easy to shop in. One downside of the sale is that every single sweater I picked up, and trust me— I picked up a LOT— were all a size small. However, the sizing for the rest of the items is much more varied.

There is a wide range of styles and patterns for all of the items being sold. There are items for everyone. Merchandise came in both chic, understated styles as well as colorful, spunky ones.

A solid winter accessories section is also a notable highlight— hats and scarves are going for $20.

Cash and credit cards accepted. All items sold as is, and all sales are final.

I give this sale an 8/10 for having killer deals and lots of items. I really recommend hitting this one up at some point. It might be worth it to use some restraint though because 260 always ends up slashing prices even further towards the end of their sales.

Rosie Assoulin: 75% off, yet still too expensive

By: Gabriella Rose

Set up: The Rosie Assoulin sample sale was very expensive, and therefore not worth a trip. They had gorgeous pieces, but still not affordable. There were casual beach dresses that were now $395- at first glance I thought I had accidentally mistaken it for the original retail price…not the sample sale price! The sale had a lot of merchandise. There were a ton of racks filled with clothing, and everything was very organized (there were multiple pieces and sizes of each item). The sale had a small and messy table in the back that was filled with bags; The bags looked as if they were made of straw and would fall apart the next day.

Merchandise/ pricing: The space had different racks throughout the room that were labeled $195, $295, $395, $495+. There were 3 hats left, and 10-15 bags left ($175 each). I saw really pretty blue high low dresses, and a ton of plaid dresses as well. The plaid dresses were great because they had a dual purpose: they could be cute for work and for dinner afterwards (plaid dresses were $295). Rosie Assoulin sample sale had a ton of stripes throughout the strore; there were striped dresses, stripped shirts, and stripped pants. There was a table in the middle of the room with a lot of “I love NY” hoodies which looked both comfortable and cozy. In terms of accessories, there were a bunch of shoes left (went from around $100-$195)- in shades blue, red, nude, and black.

Rate: 4/10 Great pieces, but too expensive and just simply not worth it.

You Need to go to the Jonathan Simkhai Sale!!

By: Eve Orbach

Guys, seriously, Get. There. ASAP! As soon as you finish reading this— heck, go right now, while you read this. (just make sure to look both ways before crossing 😉 The Jonathan Simkhai sample sale was a total hit! Jonathan Simkhai is famous for making beautiful, detailed dresses and at this sale there were many great ones to choose from. Styles of dresses ranged from casual everyday pieces to stunning floor length gowns. Many of the dresses were $195, which is a great deal for a couture dress. I even was able to find an adorable summery number for just $85. The prices of the gowns varied, but there were so many stunning ones.

Women’s dresses, sweaters, denim, pants, jackets, and tops were arranged by size and category. It was very well organized and that made it a pleasure to shop at. There was also a wide variety of items available for children ranging from infants up to teenagers.

Some of the best deals include jeans for $65, sweaters for $50, swimwear for $20, and children’s t-shirts for $25.

There were no lines to get in. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Cash and credit cards accepted. All sales are final.

I give this sale a 9/10! There were plenty of styles and categories of items available. I left the sale with some great items that I can’t wait to wear. (Another fun bonus of the sale— there were Kenzo items for children and teens. I was even able to get some holiday presents for my younger siblings. $20 for a Kenzo hat? Unreal!)

The SAMple Sale was Simply OK

By: Eve Orbach

The Sam. Sample sale had great winter coats but at a discount of approximately 50% to 60%, better discounts can be found elsewhere. Simply put, this sale was underwhelming. Women’s coats were the most heavily featured item, but there were styles for men and children as well. Overall the price markdowns were significant, but paying upwards of $200-$300 at a sale is definitely not what I would call a great steal. If you are in the market for a new winter coat then this might be worth attending, but don’t go in with high expectations. (I tried to get a new coat because my four year old horrible purple coat is stain-ridden, but alas— I was unsuccessful.)

There was a good range of sizes, colors, and styles available. There were long lines to enter, and unless you are on the sale’s guest list you might end up waiting over 20 minutes in the cold just to get a jacket (kind of ironic, no?).

The coats were hung up neatly on hangers. There was a women’s section, men’s section, and children’s section all organized by style.

All sales are final. Cash and major credit cards are accepted. The opening times for each day vary; be sure to check the picture below to get there on time.

I gave this sale a 4/10. The long lines and high prices made this sale a bust.

LOTS to buy at the Amicale cashmere sample sale

By: Gabriella Rose

Set up: The Amicale sample sale was a true hit! There were endless amounts of cashmere for both men and women. The set up goes as follows: the room was divided in “half” between the men and the women. Each side was then categorized by the specific merchandise. Both sections had ENDLESS amounts of boxes that were labeled with the price. Everything in the room was extremely organized, and it was very easy to find what you were looking for. For the women, there were boxes of scarves, gloves, hats, sweaters, sweatshirts, and robes. Everything was organized in the boxes, and looked brand new. For the men, there were also boxes filled with gloves, hats, scarves, sweaters, and robes. The room was big and not too crowded, so it was enjoyable and fun to shop in.

Merchandise/ pricing: Each item at the sample sale had a different price. The prices for the women went as follows: cashmere sweaters $95 (3 for $250), cashmere woven throws $135, fedora felt $30, faux fur scarf $20 (2 for $30), knit cashmere gloves $25 (5 for $100), scarves and wraps $20 (3 for $50), and knit hats with fur pom $40 (3 for $100). Men’s prices went as follows: leather gloves $40, cashmere scarves $40, woven hats $15, and sweaters $95. The prices were great, and all of the merchandise looked excellent quality. There was a TON of merchandise left, and even more unopened boxes underneath everything that was out. There were multiple sizes for everything as well. There were a lot of great holiday gifts as well, such as pre-wrapped gloves. There are gorgeous pieces and warm blankets. This sample sale was a true hit, there was a LOT to buy!
