Going, Going, Gone: Inside the Lord & Taylor Closing Sale

Going, Going, Gone: Inside the Lord & Taylor Closing Sale

By: Cristina Martin

Lord & Taylor opened it’s New York flagship doors back in 1914 making it the oldest department store,  established in 1826. Lord & Taylor officially closes it’s doors to its 5th Avenue mansion January 2019. Goodbye to over 100 years of memories of mothers, daughters, and friends shopping at the iconic store. This news came to us shortly before Henri Bendel told us they would be closing their doors after 123 years at the upper 5th Avenue location. Why? Well, it’s no secret that retail is in some serious trouble. The internet and sites like Amazon have been threatening retail and brick and mortar businesses for years now.

Lord & Taylor was a huge part of my childhood. When my mother finished work, we would browse the floors looking for makeup, outfits for special events and every day, and accessories. I’ll never forget walking into the bright lights on the cosmetics floor captivated by the perfume smells and the glamour. As a kid, there were only a few pieces of clothing that weren’t from Lord & Taylor. Also, it wasn’t Christmas until we passed by the Lord & Taylor windows.

When I was a New York City college student, I entered Lord & Taylor for the first time unaccompanied by my mom. We switched when I started college; she left the city to pursue a new job in New Jersey. All of the sudden Lord & Taylor wasn’t so glamorous anymore. I noticed the retail chain begin it’s descended from high-fashion. Today the store is on it’s way to being extinct and the Christmas windows are black.

It was only right to return one more time together to pay our respects and score some good deals. This past weekend was my first time walking in the store after quite some time. Cosmetics are just as I remember, but after a closer look, I was horrified. As you ride up the escalator, the sales floor is a mess. There is clothing shoved everywhere with no rhyme or reason. Brands or sizes aren’t together. Shoppers are scouring racks just to find something. Almost every floor is like this. It can take you a good day or two to go through everything. Most of the clothing was 40% off with an extra 20% off. Some higher-end brands that were left were 30% off instead of 40%. Some brands pulled their merchandise from the department store. NARS, Coach, and Ted Baker are few big names that chose not to restock the troubled retailer.

How does this sale compare to sample sales? Well, it’s hard to make a fair comparison since many sample sales are only a few days, lower overhead costs, lower inventory. This sale has enough merchandise to fill a department store and significantly higher overhead costs. The short answer some items on sale are better than sample sales, but some items are still overpriced compared to sample sales. For example, J Brand and Halston Heritage just had sample sales these past weeks. Prices at the respective sales were really good for sample sale standards. However, at Lord & Taylor, I scored a pair of J Brand jeans for $14, and my mom picked up a Halston shirt for $16. You can’t beat that! When I walked over to the evening dresses, I found Marchesa Notte for $900. At their last sample sale, they were going for $300.

If you have the head and the time to sit there and go through the seven floors that make up that iconic flagship, or you’re like me and want to pay your last respects, it is 100% worth the trip. You can go home with some really lovely pieces. If you’re a seasoned sample sale shopper, while you browse think to yourself, “Can I get this cheaper at a sample sale?” Happy Shopping!

Nothing to be Excited About at the Tabitha Simmons Sample Sale

By: Cristina Martin

One question: Why is size 37 the most popular size at shoe sample sale. I’ve been noticing that recently. Even when I visited the Paul Andrew sample sale, 37 seemed to be the only thing on the menu. It’s Deja vu at the Tabitha Simmons sample sale. There wasn’t really any great styles, high prices, and mostly only size 37.

Prices were incredibly high. With Black Friday and Cyber Monday happening this week, high pricing isn’t the smartest strategy. Samples were really close to $100, and the stock only got worse from there. Everything was well over $100, with boots reaching up to $250. The jewelry pricing was insane. Some earrings went up to $300! There will be better deals later this week, and certainly better sample sales happening this week! Happy shopping!

Cushine Et Ochs: Total Elegance Within Reach

By: Cristina Martin

Shopdrop VIP shoppers got a sneak peek at the Cushine Et Oches sample sale before it opens to the public on Thursday. Cushine is a brand that radiates modern elegance and style. Perfect for today’s New York woman. The showroom was filled with samples and regular stock. There were about 3 – 4 racks of samples, including a damaged rack for $75. Regular stock was 80% off, samples ranged from $75 to $250, and shoes and accessories were at 75% off.

Everything is so beautiful, but the prices are still pretty high. Although they are offering large discounts, retail prices points are so high that it carries over to the sale price. Activewear is probably the best deal. At 80% off you can work out in sexy Cushine activewear for cheap! This sale is a splurge sale no doubt. If you’re able to splurge, we totally recommend it. Another One Day Yigal Azrouel Sample Sale

By: Cristina Martin

The Yigal Azrouel sample sale comes around a few times a year and showcases some of their dresses, tops, bottoms, jackets, older samples, and their famous scarves for sales. The sale is pretty uniform every time it comes around. Yigal Azrouel retails for over $300. Regular stock started at $99 and Cut25/YYigal line started at $25. Although prices were decent, the discount was large.

We rated the Yigal Azrouel sample sale a 7 out of 10. It wasn’t bad, but nothing stood out. Ever since they moved from their private office to a WeWork, the sale has been one day only in the WeWork common space. Prices have stayed the same for the most part. Yigal does have some beautiful pieces. I did notice some repeated pieces from previous sales. If you’re a huge fan of the brand this sale totally excites you. Other than that, pass by if you have the time. Happy shopping!

Three Brands Under One Roof: Joie, Equipment, and Current/Elliot Sample Sale

By: Cristina Martin

For the first time in a long time, I had a good experience at a 260 sample sale. Three brands took over the Wooster Street location. The Joie, Equipment, and Current/Elliot sample sale had no lines to get in, the staff was actually nice, and the shopping experience was pleasant overall. I’m in just as much shock as you are. The space and pricing were organized by brand, so I’ll do that here as well.

Equipment:
That’s the first brand you see after you check in your things. Prices were below $100 and the merchandise was SO cute! However, I am slightly biased because I love Equipment. You can shop from a variety of tops, bottoms and PJ sets for both winter and summer. Most of the merch is from spring/summer, but you can also find some cozy winter sweaters. The Equipment section was very wrinkled, and some of the merchandise had safety pins on it.

Joie:
Joie is up next taking up the left side of the room and downstairs. Prices started at $10 for camisoles and went up to $200 for suede, leather, and fur jackets. Joie had mostly spring/summer items. You can stock up on shorts and tees. They even had a rack of one and two-piece bathing suits in this beautiful blue and white pattern. There were also a ton of denim and dresses to choose from. As for fall/winter items, you could browse through a few sweaters and dresses. Shoes were downstairs. This was very limited as they only had what was out and most of the merchandise was a size 37. There was a very small section for 39 and 40.

Current/Elliot:
The smallest section goes to Current/Elliot. However, denim and pants ruled this section. If you’re looking for jeans, go to Current/Elliot, don’t pass go, don’t collect $200. Prices ranged from $10 – $200. They also had a pretty large selection of long sleeve flannels and button downs, shorts, and long denim skirts.

Overall we gave the Joie, Equipment, and Current/Elliot sample sale an 8.5 out of 10. Although most of the merchandise was spring/summer it was all good stuff. You can also snag a few sweaters and flannels if you look. Shoes were a bit disappointing. Prices were pretty good this time around. I also didn’t leave there in a mad mood for once. We recommend you check it out to stock up on casual outfits. Happy shopping!
